1536 : The Year that Changed Henry VIII

Henry VIII fascinates, compels and repulses us, in equal measure. After all the films, novels and paintings, Henry VIII is the British monarch we think we all know, and know all about.

Yet, one central mystery has remained explained. Why did this king move from being an affable, generous and acclaimed prince - as he was in his youth - to being the fat, ruthless, monstrous tyrant, which whom we are all familiar?

This book argues that the answer is to be found in 1536. In this one year, an astonishing number of important events occurred, which decisively shaped the character of Henry VIII, his succeeding reign, England’s history and the image of this king that has descended to posterity. 1536 explores this year of threats, betrayal, rebellion, grief, aging and misfortune, and focuses particularly on masculinity, religion, power and image.

To understand Henry VIII’s character and reign, we need to realise that there was a ‘before’ and an ‘after’ 1536. Only then, can we fully fathom the heart of this king.
